The 8th Continent is a futuristic, self-sustainable floating facility designed to clean the oceans of waste by collecting plastic debris from the surface and recycling it on board.

Designed by Slovak designer Lenka Petrakova, a Lead architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, the floating ocean cleaning facility consists of five main parts:

1. The Barrier — which serves to collect waste and harvest tidal energy for power generation
2. The Collector — where waste is sorted, recycled and stored
3. The Greenhouses — where plants are grown, and water is desalinated for domestic use and cultivation of plants
4. The Research and Education Centre — to study and showcase the increasingly troubling side of aquatic environments
5. Living Quarters

The 8th Continent was awarded the 2020 Grand Prix Award for Architecture and Innovation of the Sea by Fondation Jacques Rougerie — Institut de France.
